A Backyard Wedding With Meaningful Details

As a wedding photographer who's seen many beautiful and unique weddings, I know I'm not supposed to have favorites. But, this backyard wedding in Rancho Santa Fe, California, planned by Heather Keith Events, is one for the books. The bride, Kate, and her mother were so intentional about creating both an amazing guest experience and incorporating very personal and meaningful details to represent the happy couple.

It was genuinely so difficult to narrow down the gallery enough to share with you!

Sealing Ceremony at the Newport Beach Temple

Kate & Trevor were sealed together in the Newport Beach Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Family and friends gathered to welcome them as they exited the temple and celebrated their marriage. My favorite thing about the Newport Beach temple? The scent of jasmine! There is star jasmine planted all over the grounds, so not only are the grounds a beautiful place for wedding portraits but it smells absolutely incredible.

The first meaningful detail: Kate wore her mother, Ann's, original wedding dress. With only a few sleeve alterations to make it a little more timeless, it was so special to Kate to wear the pearl-trimmed full A-line gown.

A Guest-Centered Celebration with Personal Details

While it would have been enough to have this gorgeous private backyard space as it is, the couple elevated things further with an enormous clear and white tent strung with lights and chandeliers. I really have to point out all of these amazing details.

For their guest experience, they had a variety of love-themed lawn games and delicious appetizers served to the music of a live harp. For the kids (and several young-at-heart adults), Inflate San Diego provided a gorgeous white bouncy castle with an impressive balloon installation in wedding colors of powder blues and creams.

As a unique seating chart, guests were met with handwritten thank you notes from the Kate & Trevor in blue envelopes. Kate found their cake topper, a German-made vintage ceramic bride and groom figurine, at a thrift store!

Dinner featured a live saxophone and a smattering of creative and colorful dishes. After the toasts, parent dances, and cake cutting, the party kicked off. At the end of the night, DJ PBaby from Utah had the whole group come together with their phone lights for a magical last dance for the couple, ending in the biggest group hug I've ever seen. He also provided cold sparklers for the dancing and exit, which I highly recommend if you're even remotely on the fence about them for your own wedding.

And if all of that wasn't enough, Kate changed into a stunning vintage blue tweed dress for their exit -- the very same dress her grandmother wore as she left her own wedding a generation ago!

Weddings like this one really just have my heart, because they're so personal to the couple. Let it be a reminder: you don't need to chase the trends, you don't need to please everyone. Prioritize self-expression and showing love to your guests. It creates an amazing environment of love, support, and shared joy. And that is exactly what a wedding should be!
